By signing on to the WIN Charta, companies voluntarily commit to sustainability.  The charta was initiated by the Sustainable Business Practices Initiative (WIN), which was established as part of the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg’s sustainability strategy.

The WIN Charta of Baden-Wurttemberg is currently the only sustainability management system specifically for small and medium-sized businesses in a German state. It is characterised by being easy to implement, very transparent and a special approach for increasing sustainability on site. The WIN charta consists of 12 guiding principles that cover various aspects of sustainability (economical, environmental, social), state shared basic values and offer guides for an implementation in regional and local contexts.

By signing the WIN Charta, companies pledge publicly to comply with the values anchored in its principles and to strive to achieve the goals that can be derived from them.  In addition, when they sign on to the WIN Charta, the companies name a regional WIN project in Baden-Wurttemberg that they want to support.  Furthermore, the signatories pledge to regularly submit written reports on the measures they have taken. These reports are provided in a standardised format so that they can be compared.

Pursuant to the schedule of the WIN Charta, the development and coordination of a target concept is followed by a one-year implementation process and will then be concluded with a sustainability report. This allows local branches to establish a credible and implementable sustainability reporting for their employees and their direct stakeholders and to highlight and communicate their commitment to sustainability.

About 100 companies in Baden-Wurttemberg have signed the WIN-Charta and are in the process of implementing it. The companies that have signed on come from many different industries (e.g. mechanical engineering, automotive, textile, banking, restaurants, horticulture, viticulture, energy supply, the trades, tourism and the chemical sector) and, in terms of their size, they range from small crafts enterprises with a few employees to global corporations based in Baden-Wurttemberg.
